Using Positive Language In Even The Most Negative Scenario

Not every blog post we’ll ever have to write will be happiness and fluffy ducks, in fact, for some businesses tackling serious and negative subjects could pose a real problem when trying to create digital content.

Getting the tone right is essential to ensure your readers not only connect with your message but also take it seriously as well as take action.

For me, using positive language is an absolute must when dealing with negative topics and serious subjects.

That doesn’t mean your content should be filled with cliches, platitudes and delusional optimism – far from it, people will see through something that isn’t genuine or feels forced and switch off immediately.

Using positive language to me is more about creating a hopeful and inspirational mindset.  Allowing your content to deal directly, succinctly, sensitively and sincerely with the negative or serious message but offering solutions, hope, inspiration and alternative options to the reader.

Ensuring your reader doesn’t come away with some sort of apocalyptic doomsday thought process is absolutely key to getting them to engage with your service.

For example, you might be an accountant trying to ensure they understand the severity of not completing their tax returns properly or on time, but instead of dwelling on how much they have screwed up you should be focusing on what practical steps they need to take to begin rectifying the problem – one of which might be asking you for help.

Think about it, if your reader has clicked into your post or opened your email in the first place they already know they’re screwed or have messed up.  They want you to make them feel like you can help them fix the Armageddon going on in their head – don’t make them feel worse by causing more stress and worry.

Be realistic, factual and straight forward but back every negative remark up with something positive that makes them feel that there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

Conditioning ourselves to be less negative when writing about subjects that can be hard to find positivity in can often be a challenge which for some people can be a bit of a head melt.  If that’s happening to you don’t forget one of my team at Excalibur Press could create a bespoke blog post for you with a strong call to action and clear message of positive reinforcement.

Alternatively, if it’s just a case of needing to identify some ideas or sample language phrases to start with you can always book an Inspiration Session with me to help you with some ideas for content marketing and blog posts.
