Online Event To Help Newry, Mourne & Down Groups Support Economically Inactive People Into Self-Employment

A special online information session is set to help organisations support economically inactive people in Newry Mourne and Down District Council through self-employment.

Taking place on Friday, October 10 from 10am to 11am via Zoom, Empowering Your Community Explore Self Employment To Get Started In Business will introduce attendees to the Go Succeed: Get Started In Business programme.

Delivered in partnership with Newry Mourne and Down District Council as part of the wider Go Succeed initiative, the session is aimed at organisations and groups who work with individuals currently not in employment or unable to work, offering them an alternative pathway to income generation through self-employment.

This informative hour-long session will provide a full overview of the programme’s support options, including drop-in clinics for service users and members of the public, structured business workshops, and access to up to 10 hours of one-to-one mentoring. The programme’s bespoke mentoring framework has been developed specifically for those facing additional barriers to entering the workforce.

Organisers will also explain the full eligibility criteria for participation and highlight the availability of a £750 fund that participants can apply for to help kickstart their self-employment journey.

Economically inactive people are those who are not currently in work and not actively looking for a job. This can include people who are long-term sick or disabled, carers, parents without access to childcare, students, or those recovering from illness. It can also include people who have stepped back from work due to confidence, transport, or digital barriers, as well as early retirees or those waiting for a change in circumstances before returning to employment.

The term also covers those caring for family members, managing long-term health conditions, studying full time, or taking time out for personal reasons. Many people in this group want to contribute but face barriers that make traditional employment difficult. Typically economically inactive people may or may not be in receipt of benefits but are considered outside the active labour market.

There are 50 places available for the event, which will also explore how organisations can work more closely with the programme to support those in their communities. As well as information on accessing support, the event will help attendees better understand how to guide potential participants through the application process.
